Shopping anyone?

Welcome to the old Kimba General Store
There are a lot of photos for this post. It was only a small building but it was packed to the rafters with all sorts of goodies. I have chosen the best of the photos, and this is probably only half of them. The walls and shelves are packed with memorabilia

A whole book of lace samples, sideways view!

Why do some images come out like this?

Fully packed shelves

Old time scales

Lolly jars complete with lollies

Take your pick

Spinning top

Tennis racquets

I am enjoying a few restful days now school is back. My hubby is away with his work until tomorrow morning so it is bliss.
Today I am going to get into the vegie garden and do some baking as I have caught up with the housework for now.
Something is eating my young seedlings so I have to set up some kind of covering for them. I think it maybe birds or as Scarecrow suggested, it might be earwigs! I shall be having a close look today, all that is left is stalks on my cucumbers and zucchini.

Beautiful weather at the moment, nice and cool. I believe it is warming up again by the weekend.
My middle daughter, 24, is visiting for a week or so and is arriving Saturday from Melbourne. It will be great to catch up with her again. She is coming home for one of her friend's wedding. We are supposed to be taking our son down to athletic's also this weekend so there is a busy time ahead of us.

Have a wonderful day

Remember the Out House

Depending upon your age, you may have used one of these.
this little house is known as:

dunny - noun:- toilet or lavatory, originally an outside toilet or outhouse, now a generic term for the toilet regardless of location. Sometimes referred to as the Thunder Box! Different from the bathroom which really does contain a bath or shower for cleaning your personage.

loo - noun:- toilet

outhouse - noun:- toilet, dunny. Before modern sewage, the toilet was in it's own little "house" in the backyard. Hence out house.

thunder box - noun:- dunny, toilet.

toot - noun:- toilet
More Aussie Slang can be found here

Oops, Sorry!!

Don't waste the dunny paper.

My son couldn't believe that people actually used newspaper, and it wasn't for reading. Ouch!

We had an outside dunny on the farm where I grew up. It was a fair walk from my bedroom, down the passage, through the kitchen, turn on the back light and make my way down to the end of the verandah where there wasn't much light. I used to get scared when I had to go there, even though it was under the verandah and not in the paddock somewhere. It was usually full of busy spiders and mozzies at night. Ahhhh!

Redback On The Toilet Seat

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
I jumped high up into the air,
And when I hit the ground,
That crafty red-back spider
Wasn’t nowhere to be found.

Chorus:There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
And now I’m here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight,
And I curse that red-back spider
On the toilet seat last night.

I rushed into the missus,
Told her just where I’d been bit,
She grabbed the cut throat razor blade,
And I nearly took a fit.
I said, “Just forget what’s on your mind,
And call a doctor please,
‘Cause I’ve got a feeling that your cure,
is worse than the disease.”

I can’t lay down, I can’t sit up,
And I don’t know what to do,
And all the nurses think it’s funny,
But that’s not my point of view.
I tell you it’s embarrassing,(And that’s to say the least)
That I’m to sick to eat a bite,
While that spider had a feast!

And when I get back home again,
I tell you what I’ll do,
I’ll make that red-back suffer,
For the pain I’m going through.
I’ve had so many needles,
That I’m looking like a sieve,
And I promise you that spider,
hasn’t very long to live!

Slim Dusty had fun with this song although the original artist was Slim Newton. You can listen here for Slim Newton singing this song. I was hoping to find a better version, but this was all I could find.

Redback Spider

My husband discovered this large Redback while moving some rocks yesterday, he neally put his hand on it.
I am always finding these spiders especially on outside chairs, pushbikes and other daycare toys. I have to remember to check all the time.
I don't think their bite actually kills, but it will make you very sick. We also have black spiders similar to this, I call them black widow spiders.

Cooler weather here today, but hotting up again by Thursday and Friday.

The wind was so strong yesterday that it snapped off one of my young tomato plants. They are not big enough to stake up yet.

Wishing you a great day,

Tania

School's In

In South Australia our children return to school tomorrow for the last 9 weeks of the year. Another year nearly gone.
Our son will be going to high school at the local Catholic school next year. Another milestone in his life. Time has flown by, and is still flying at an incredible rate. It seems like only yesterday he was born.
An appropriate time to post some pictures of how school used to be.
The old school in the Kimba museum.
The old school bell, a big contrast to the siren that is heard in the schools today. I guess they had bell monitors.

The old school building, very hot in summer and very cold in winter, even though this one does have a fire place inside.

I love this neat writing, not taught like it used to be. My mother in law still writes like this today and often receives comments about it. She takes her time to get it just perfect.

The school desks complete with ink pots. My mum told me how the boys sitting behind her would dip the ends of her plaited pigtails into the wells. Boys haven't changed much over time have they?

The bookshelf packed with lots of reading material. The map on the wall was made out of some sort of cloth.

A jar full of old ink pens, my son didn't know what they were. I can just remember using the fountain pen when I was at school in the early days. I also remember having assembly with the whole school standing in straight lines at attention until we we told to stand at ease. We had to sing God Save the Queen before any formalities started. See I can remember things, maybe not recent things but my memory is renewed when thinking about or seeing things from the past.

Today the weather is 34 degrees Celcius (93.2 F) with areas of "raised dust" Yeah! Another dirty day in other words.

We have started cleaning the pool, it will take a bit of effort getting it back to swimming condition as it hasn't been touched since we last used it. The cover has been on all winter and we haven't lost too much water due to evaporation, so that's good news.

Today we were up bright and early to take our son to Little Athletics. This afternoon in a couple of hours he has soccer training so hopefully the weather improves before then.

Hope you are all having a lovely Sunday spent with your loved ones.

The Pioneer House

We spent the weekend at my parents place in Kimba, 1 1/2hours drive west. It was their turn to open up the museum on Sunday so I took the opportunity to take some photos.
The pioneer house.....this was moved to the museum and rebuilt exactly as it was.

The entrance gate

under the front verandah......some milk/cream separators

and the laundry area at one end

Inside we entered the kitchen area.........

Also in the same room.....this is only a two room cottage

a cool safe

This room also doubled as the lounge room....

The kitchen dresser....

The inside ceiling which is made of wheat bags...

The other room.........bedroom

Baby in the corner

The wardrobe.....

The ceiling in the bedroom, you can see where the wheat bags were joined

A cot for an older child. (sorry this picture insisted on going in sideways)

So there you are, I wonder how many of us could live like this nowadays. I guess if we had to, we would.
It was a beautiful day here today, 25 degrees Celcuis (77 F). The weekend is going to be hot again. Time to clean the pool I think.

Strange Weather

This is the first time I have seen the clouds this low in the afternoon heading towards the hills. That is Mount Brown in the background. Someone is getting some rain, but it isn't us, although we have had a few light showers throughout the day.
Hubby took these pictures from the top of our shed, his fault this time that it's blurry. I think he zoomed in too much on this one. I wouldn't get up there for a look, as I don't like heights.
This one we can see what is in our neighbours yard, and the low cloud in the background.

We are going away for the long weekend so it will be quiet around here for a few days.

I am working Tuesday and Wednesday next week as a favour for a friend. I will be looking after a group of children of mixed age and sex while their parents do a first aid course. Youngest is four weeks and the oldest about ten, group of about 10 children. I will have one other person helping but I think I will need to take my son along as well to help. I know in advance that I am going to be worn out by the end of the day, as we start at 9.00am and finish at 5.30pm, then have half and hour travelling time.

See you next week and enjoy your weekend.

Cheapskates

Tumbling tumble weed that the wind blew in today. I call it buckbush.

View of some storm clouds going past. Taken from our place, on a better day.

I found this cheapskates website mentioned in the latest Grassroots magazine I bought yesterday. It is another money saving site, similar to Simple Saving you may have heard of it already, if not go have a look. It is Australian and offers a free newsletter.

Another horrible hot day here today with lots of raised dust, yeah! Temperature was 34C,
( 93.2 F). It has cooled down but still no rain.

Best wishes to you and yours,
Tania
