day by day 08.04.2020

No walking pictures today.

We went to go on our usual walk, but there was a big sign on the gate telling us that due to covid-19 no one other than workers were allowed through the gate and onto the racecourse land...Pooh, damn virus! We still went for a walk just in a different direction.

Another nice Autumn day with a little cloud and a lot of sunshine. A lovely 25C {77F}.

Today's pickings.

This afternoon I went out to the garden and pulled out some plants. I have a problem with scale and these plants were affected by it so out they came. That freed up three more beds.

I transplanted these kale plants to a new spot because they weren't growing well. They have been chewed on by something. There are a lot of bugs around this year, more than other years.

I pulled out old silver beet plants that had been eaten by something and put in garlic cloves.

I topped up this bed with more soil before planting garlic.

Harvested the remainder Kale after pulling out the tall stalks.

Dug up some of the Jerusalem artichokes, there is still more down toward the bottom of the barrel. Might tackle getting them out tomorrow. I have a problem of having silver beet planted in the same barrel.

Pretty skies again.

Still undecided as to whether we will use these for garden beds. We have a problem with tree roots here invading garden beds. So now I am considering using containers for growing food. Any container will do.

Planted out some garlic that Phil brought home from work. It had already started to sprout, so I don't like my chances of having success. If not I will plant something else like lettuce.

Tea tonight.

 Not chicken pot pie...

How was your day?

  1. I tried growing Jerusalem artichokes once where I used to have a compost pile, but the voles found them! - lol

    1. I had to google what a vole was lol! I do have mice out in the patch, but they are not causing any harm yet. Jerusalem artichokes grow really well!

  2. Your pot pie looks delicious! We are going to work outside some today. It will be 93 degrees here in North Texas. Louis Dean has planted so many onions it’s ridiculous! And peppers! Cucumbers and tomatoes also. Maybe someday we will branch out and plant other veggies.....
Love seeing what you’re doing down there. My neighbor grew the dark colored tomatoes last year and they were delicious!

    1. Sounds like the weather is warming up for you Linda. Ours is cooling down.

Growing what you eat is a good idea. Sounds like Louis Dean is a keen gardener and has his favourite foods lol.

Those dark tomatoes are indeed delicious!

      Take care,

  3. We spend time at a nearby lake front park which we knew they had closed but Hubby saw when has was driving past there yesterday that they had a police car posted at the gate. Good grief!! The gate is 10 feet tall!!

    1. Hi Lana,

It is getting terrible with the restrictions. There has only been one case here {not confirmed} and yet we have endure all the restrictions. We live out of town where there is no close contact with other people. It is ridiculous but I have no issues with complying if it helps stop the spread.

At least I can still go walking, just not where I was going.

10 foot tall gate, that is funny!

  4. Hi Tania, we are seeing a lot more bugs this season too. No bees though. Usually we have native bees, honey bees, blue-banded bees, carpenter bees and teddy bear bees. I think the fires and the droughts are the likely cause of the bees disappearing in this area.

    1. Hi Sherri.

That is sad to hear. I hope the bees come back to your area soon. Hopefully rain will come to increase growth and help with the bees return.

  5. Those photos of your skies are just stunning Tania. You have been busy in your garden. I have been feeding my veggie gardens with the castings from my worm farm. Your tea last night looked delicious.!

    1. Hi Julie,

Hope you are coping with being in lock down. Bet you are getting lots of craft done.

  6. Tania if you have spare Jerusalem Artichoke, could you send me a couple of corms please. I have been on the look out for these for ages and just havent been able to find them. I'll send you some New Guinea Bean seeds. Today I had a load of potting mix delivered. My garden is full and I am adding to my container garden. I have filled two containers and have another four to go. Bluey is yet to drills hole in the bottom. They're half 44's. I have a lot of seedlings that need to be planted out very soon. I have no long finished sewing up a quiet book for my Grandie. She turns two at the end of the month. My days are bits of this and that. I really dont have time to be bored. I'm loving seeing what you're up to.

    1. Hi Jane,

I do have spare Jerusalem Artichokes and would love to send you some. Not sure of restrictions of sending interstate though. South Australia has strict rules regarding fruit and veggies coming in, so you may not be able to send the bean seeds. I will find out and let you know.

I am taking your container idea and running with it. I think it would work better than trying to grow in the raised beds. I am searching everywhere for containers to put plants in. I have mentioned about the 44's to Phil.

My days are a bit of everything too.

  7. Hi Tania,
Just checking in :) I'm always impressed with how attentive you are to your gardens. I wish I was out in mine as often as you. I've got plans to take out a pear tree that's never done well and put some more raised beds in its place for next Spring; a special spot for beans, pumpkin and tomatoes for next year as where I had been growing tomatoes doesn't get enough light now. I must say your soil looks very good :) We are entering into week 3 of lockdown soon and I am missing my family very much. I just want to hug our little grandies :( Well you take care Tania and enjoy your walks in safety. Blessings - Linda x

    1. Hello there Linda, so lovely to hear from you again.

I am missing my family too, that is the hardest thing to deal with at the moment. I probably wont see my grandies for Easter and that hurts.

We are not in complete lock-down yet, we can still get around although we are being told to stay home except for essential travel eg work, food shopping or caring for family. The police are patrolling everywhere to keep people in line.

      Stay safe and well,
      xTania

  8. I agree about the insect pests this year Tania. I have never had armyworm before (had never even heard of it) but they arrived in full force a little while ago. Trying to get on top of them is tricky with organics. I don't mind sharing but they are voracious and pretty horrible too.

  9. The herbs in my kitchen garden, got a beating from pests too. Mostly the lemon balm as the leaf eaters, loved it. Not sure if I can bring it back to life. When the neighbours chickens escaped into our yard, they took care of the grasshoppers though, lol. Your kale looks good! I've got to plant my seeds today. Along with whatever else I can get to germinate this time of year. I have one of those small indoors greenhouse, jobbies, so I can cheat the elements with germination. But I am going to be way behind with production, as it's getting late in the season.
